This photograph, taken by an unknown person, shows my uncle Carl –he was born in 1923, so perhaps 1932–in Kalispell.
I had forgotten that this picture existed of my heroic uncle, killed in World War II in what Kurt Vonnegut Jr. called the Children’s Crusade.
